Benchmark Methodology
How we calculate the OEE targets and industry benchmarks displayed on our benchmarks page.
Data Sources
Our benchmark targets are derived from multiple published industry sources:
- SEMI E10 / SEMI E79: Equipment state classification standards that define how Availability, Performance, and Quality are measured at the equipment level
- ISO 22400-2:2014: Manufacturing operations management KPI definitions, including OEE calculation methodology and aggregation rules
- Published industry surveys: Average, top-quartile, and world-class OEE ranges published by industry associations and equipment manufacturers
- Flowstate platform data: As our customer base grows, anonymized and aggregated equipment performance data will supplement published benchmarks (opt-in only)
OEE Calculation
OEE is the product of three factors:
- Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time. Measures unplanned downtime losses. Requires shift schedule configuration for accurate calculation.
- Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time x Total Count) / Run Time. Measures speed losses including slow cycles and small stops.
- Quality = Good Count / Total Count. Measures defect and rework losses.
When shift schedules are not configured, Flowstate displays Utilization (run time / total observed time) instead of OEE, clearly labeled as such.
Equipment Classification
Benchmarks are grouped by equipment type because different machine categories have structurally different OEE profiles. A CNC machining center has different availability patterns than a packaging line.
Flowstate supports 22 equipment types. Benchmark targets are provided for the most common categories where sufficient published data exists.
Fleet Aggregation
Per ISO 22400, fleet-level OEE is computed from aggregated underlying time and count data, not as a simple average of individual equipment OEEs. A machine running 20 hours contributes proportionally more to fleet OEE than one running 2 hours.
Infrastructure devices (sensors, gateways, edge nodes) are excluded from OEE calculations. Only production equipment contributes to fleet benchmarks.
Limitations
Industry benchmarks represent general targets, not guarantees. OEE varies significantly by product mix, batch size, operator experience, equipment age, and maintenance practices. Benchmarks are most useful as directional indicators and for tracking improvement over time.
As the Flowstate customer base grows, we plan to publish anonymized, opt-in benchmarks grouped by equipment type, shift pattern, and industry vertical. These will supplement, not replace, the published industry standards.
