What You Need

Cat6 Ethernet cableIncluded in kit
Flowstate CL260 edge nodeIncluded in kit

Customer provides:

  • TIA Portal project access
  • PLC parameter access
  • DB block documentation

Physical Connection

  1. 1

    Locate PROFINET port

The S7-1500 has one or two PROFINET/Ethernet ports (X1, X2) on the CPU module front. Use the port configured for OPC UA or PUT/GET access.

  2. 2

    Connect Ethernet cable

Cat6 from the PLC PROFINET port to the Flowstate edge node. If the PLC is on a separate network, connect through a managed switch.

  3. 3

    Set PLC IP

In TIA Portal: Device Configuration > PROFINET Interface > Ethernet Addresses. Set a static IP in the 10.0.100.x range. Download to PLC.

Machine Configuration

  1. 1

    Enable PUT/GET access

In TIA Portal: PLC Properties > Protection & Security > Connection Mechanisms > check 'Permit access with PUT/GET communication from remote partner'. Download to PLC.

PUT/GET is required for S7comm protocol access. For OPC UA (recommended), this step is not needed.

  2. 2

    Enable OPC UA server

In TIA Portal: PLC Properties > OPC UA > check 'Activate OPC UA Server'. Set the server port (default 4840). Configure security policy (None for testing, Sign+Encrypt for production).

  3. 3

    Expose DB blocks

For each Data Block to expose via OPC UA: DB Properties > Attributes > check 'Accessible from HMI/OPC UA'. Uncheck 'Optimized block access' if using S7comm. Download to PLC.

Verification

  1. 1

    Browse OPC UA namespace

From the edge node, connect to opc.tcp://<plc-ip>:4840 using UaExpert. Browse to ServerInterfaces > project > DB blocks. Verify tag values match TIA Portal monitoring.

  2. 2

    Dashboard check

PLC data blocks appear in Flowstate with live tag values, correct data types, and update rates matching the OPC UA publishing interval.

Available Metrics (7)

Any DB block tag (Bool, Int, Real, String)
Process values (temperature, pressure, speed, position)
Machine state / program step
Alarm word / fault bits
Counter values (parts, cycles)
Setpoints and actuals
I/O states (digital and analog)
